Parshall flumes provide accurate flow measurement for wastewater and stormwater in open channels, essential for process control and compliance monitoring.

What is a Parshall Flume?

A Parshall flume is a standardized open-channel flow measurement device with a converging inlet, throat, and diverging outlet. Flow rate is determined by measuring water depth at a specific point.

Advantages of Parshall Flumes

  • Self-cleansing with minimal debris accumulation
  • Accurate flow measurement over wide range
  • Low head loss
  • Standardized dimensions and ratings
  • Works as primary treatment (settling in throat)

Standard Sizes

Parshall flumes range from 1-inch to 10-foot widths. Common sizes for wastewater:

  • 1 ft (305 mm): 0.09-3.9 L/s
  • 2 ft (610 mm): 0.15-11.9 L/s
  • 3 ft (914 mm): 0.18-24.5 L/s
  • 6 ft (1829 mm): 0.26-85.5 L/s

Installation Requirements

  • Level approach channel (minimum 10x flume width)
  • Proper elevation for free discharge or submerged flow
  • Level mounting in channel
  • Still well for level measurement
