Indonesia is the world’s largest palm oil producer, generating massive volumes of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) requiring effective treatment.

POME Characteristics

  • High temperature (80-95°C at discharge)
  • High BOD: 25,000-50,000 mg/L
  • High COD: 50,000-100,000 mg/L
  • High TSS and oil & grease
  • Acidic pH: 3.5-5.0

Treatment Requirements

Indonesian regulations require BOD < 100 mg/L for discharge. Zero discharge to water bodies is encouraged.

Treatment Technologies

Anaerobic Digestion

High-rate anaerobic reactors (UASB, CSTR) can reduce BOD by 80-90% while producing biogas. Excellent for high-strength POME.

Aerobic Treatment

Activated sludge or sequential batch reactors for polishing to meet discharge standards.

Methane from anaerobic digestion can be captured for electricity generation, reducing plant energy costs.
