Comments are closed.

Electroplating and metal finishing operations generate wastewater containing heavy metals, cyanides, and acids requiring specialized treatment.

Wastewater Characteristics

  • Heavy metals: chromium, nickel, zinc, copper, cadmium
  • Cyanide compounds
  • Acidic or alkaline pH
  • Low volumes but high toxicity

Treatment Process

Hexavalent Chromium Reduction

Chemical reduction of Cr6+ to Cr3+ using sulfur dioxide, sodium metabisulfite, or ferrous sulfate.

Heavy Metal Precipitation

pH adjustment with hydroxide precipitation. Addition of sulfide for improved removal of certain metals.

Cyanide Destruction

Alkaline chlorination or hydrogen peroxide oxidation for cyanide decomposition.

Clarification

Sedimentation or flotation for sludge separation.

Sludge Management

Metal hydroxide sludges require dewatering and secure disposal. Recovery of metals may be economically viable.

Water Reuse

Treated water can be recycled to rinsing operations after quality verification.
